A Way of Looking

at Things

A Physicality Made

of Materials

I designed and produced a 32-page book presenting the essay A Way of Looking at Things by Peter Zumthor. The challenge of this project was to communicate the subject matter using only typography while maintaining the readability of the essay.

Using a typewriter, I created typographic illustrations of four brutalist buildings, gradually constructing their architectural forms through repeated characters and glyphs. This process helped create a strong synergy between type and image, translating architectural structure into typography.

To further develop the interaction between these elements and the typeset essay, I printed the typographic illustrations onto tracing paper. These layered over blocks of text, creating a visual dialogue between image, typography, and written content throughout the book.
